CARPE DIEM FARMS - A 48-acre naturalist's oasis surrounded by the Nantahala
National Forest. The Farm is a self-sustaining treasure in the Highlands community where one can go to grow, learn and commune or connect with mountain nature. The mountain campus and programs comfortably meet the needs of those who come from across the country to attend workshops, seminars, vision quests; to volunteer and to learn from one another. The staff and volunteers are committed to the vision of "empowering individuals through live changes to see the opportunities and possibilities which abound." CDF is a holistic life enrichment, wellness, learning and retreat center, who partners with the Support our Students (SOS) program and project challenge. We are an Audubon Sanctuary, a partner and steward in the Department of Natural Resources stream and forest programs. HIGHLANDS CHAPTER OF THE HUMANE SOCIETY - Our mission is to provide humane care and treatment for animals needing temporary protection in the Flats and Highlands Townships; operating a shelter with the goal of saving both adoptable (healthy and treatable pets, focusing on securing loving homes for all (returned to owner or placed in new homes), with euthanasia reserved only for non-rehabilitative animals. To promote and subsidize spay/neuter programs as a method of animal population control. HIGHLANDS WOMEN'S CLUB - Fibber Magee's Closet - Premier resale shop for gently used and never worn clothing and accessories for men, women and children. Fibber's is a project of the Highlands Woman's Club with all proceed donated to worthy organizations in the town of Highlands and County of Macon. 526-9938

HUDSON LIBRARY - The Oldest public library in North Carolina. It is a branch of the Macon County Public Library in Franklin and a member of the Fontana Regional Library. This gives patrons access to a wide variety of resources from all six member libraries. The collection includes books for children and adults, videos for a wide audience, and books on tape. Plus there is Internet access, and other computer resources such as word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

PEGGY CROSBY COMMUNITY SERVICE CENTER - Is home to a wide variety of community organizations. Need a place to donate your gently worn clothes or used books? Fibber Magee's Closet and the Book Worm accept donations for resale and use the proceeds to benefit the community. Have some skills that you would like to share? The Literacy Council will train and put you to work tutoring children or English as a second language. Need to drop a few pounds? Weigh Watchers conducts weekly meetings at the Center. Looking for fun and interesting classes? The Center for Life Enrichment has a full summer program. Need access to health and social services? Macon County Public Health Department, Employment Security Commission, and Department of Social Services are available at the Center. Need help coping with the difficulties of life? Ann Robinette, MS, RN, SC is available to assist as a private therapist. The Family Counseling program also offers free and reduced rate counseling. Interested in the environment? Check out the Highlands Land Trust, the Upper Cullasaja Watershed Association, and the Jackson-Macon Conservation Alliance.
