2008 Season - MAP & WEBSITE

Always Patsy Cline
Opens on June 19 and runs until July 6, with shows Tuesday through Saturday at
8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

Patsy Cline, like the Highlands Playhouse, offered classic performances on
stage. Her music is just as vibrant and beautiful today as it was when she made
her first recording. Cindy Summers captures the music of one of America’s
favorite entertainers in Always Patsy Cline, our first production of the regular
summer season for 2008.

On Golden Pond
Opens July 10 and runs until July 20.

On Golden Pond by Ernest Thompson, the season’s second show, tells the
touching story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, a couple in the twilight years of their
marriage. The play is set in the Thayer’s summer house on a lake called Golden
Pond.

On Broadway
70th Anniversary Salute to Broadway runs July 24 through August 10.

What better way to continue our anniversary celebration than with music that
highlights our most popular productions? Two of the Highlands Playhouse favorite
musicians, DaMon Goff and Sam Dunaway, have written, produced and directed
an original review presenting the best of 70 years of musicals in Highlands. It was
no easy task, but Sam and DaMon researched, wrote and arranged some of the
best and most memorable songs from past Playhouse shows. South Pacific, The
Sound of Music, Annie, and Fiddler on the Roof are only a few of the shows you
will find represented here. Bring the whole family to a production that will have you
humming along with every lyric.

Inherit the Wind
Runs August 14 through August 31.

We close our 70th season with Inherit the Wind, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by
Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. The death of Clarence Darrow in 1938
closed a chapter in this story of one of America’s most fascinating trials. It did not
put an end to the public’s interest. The Scopes Monkey Trial and the argument
over evolution versus creationism is every bit as relevant today as it was in
Darrow’s time. This is a great way to bring our summer season to a close.

Mountain Garden Club Plant Sale

Saturday, May 24 @

.
Two types of splendid vibrantly colored iris will be featured. Many Frilled Enchantment Iris (Iris ensata) and Yellow Flag Iris (iris pseudacorus) were donated for the sale by a generous anonymous donor.

The Yellow Flag Iris, sometimes called the Louisiana Iris, is the only yellow iris grown in the United States. The flowers usually grow 3 to 4 inches across on a robust stalk with sword-like leaves. In the Highlands area, the Yellow Flag Iris usually blooms in late May.

The Frilled Enchantment Iris is a Japanese iris with large flowers, often 5 inches across. The flowers are white with purple ruffled edges. Many have double blooms, giving lots of frilly ruffles. They are the latest iris to bloom, with the blooms lasting 2-3 weeks.

Both types of iris have been growing by our donor here in our native soil. Thus, they are hardy and ready to add color and beauty to your yard. Just plant these iris where they will have full sun exposure and lots of water. They grow best with "wet feet", where the soil is consistently wet or very damp. Areas around ponds and where water regularly drains are good places to plant them.

In Japan, iris are often planted in rice fields when the fields are heaviest with water. The fields are plugged to keep the water in place to nourish the iris as well as the rice. The more the water, the taller and more beautiful the iris!

At the Mountain Garden Club Plant Sale, gardeners will be available to provide buyers with additional advice about growing iris and other perennials in our area.

At the Sale, in addition to iris, you will see locally-grown hostas and other perennials, including asters, false indigo, goldenrod, and liatris. Mountain Garden Club Members spend weeks digging and potting plants from local gardens for the sale.

If you have plants you would like to donate to the Mountain Garden Club Plant Sale, please call Anita Williams at 828-526-9713. Club members will come at your convenience to dig and thin plants at your direction. Proceeds from the Sale will support college scholarships and local public gardening projects.

Here is some more information about our Chef Roland Mesnier event Friday evening May 30, 2008 @ Fressers Eatery @ 6:30 pm.

The following is a bit of info about the wines and winery we will be pairing with. I took the info directly from their web site. Then of course our menu ............

ST. SUPÉRY STORY
Two vineyards - one in Rutherford at the heart of Napa Valley's Cabernet Sauvignon country, the other in a serene corner of the Napa Valley - gave rise to the divine wines of St. Supéry, most notably, award-winning Cabernet Sauvignons and Sauvignon Blanc.
Every day, wine aficionados from around the world visit our winery estate in Rutherford, one of Napa Valley's best-known appellations. A tour of our wine making facility gives visitors a look at the state of modern wine making, while a visit to the historic landmark 1880 Victorian Atkinson House (now a living museum) gives them a sense of the Valley's past. Yet perhaps the biggest attraction is the uniquely informative and engaging St. Supéry Winery and Gallery
OUR PRESIDENT ROBERT SKALLI
Robert Skalli is a third generation French winemaker who was inspired by the similarities between the Napa Valley and the wine growing regions of his home. Robert's Mediterranean roots and natural proclivity toward innovation contribute as much to the style and spirit of St. Supéry wines as our grapes.

Our menu is as follows:

Passed Hors' D'oeuvres: Virtu Meritage

Chilled Lobster Tail with grilled and chilled asparagus and a corn leek relish: Chardonnay

Beef Tenderloin Encrusted in a blend of colorful crushed peppercorns, wild mushroom cabernet sauce, Yukon gold potato Mousseline, baby seasonal vegetables:
Cabernet

Lambs lettuce, baby arugula and endive salad with Lady apples and brie: Sauvignon Blanc

Ruby's and Gold: Moscato
